Bay Bluffs and Mediterranean Style

Los Osos, CA

2020

This house was built in 1970 by the current owner on a unique property at the foot of Estero Bay. The garden offers incredible views from Hollister Peak to Morro Rock and beyond. Preserving the view was paramount to the design, a must for the homeowners.

Another consideration for this property was their across-the-street neighbors, whose property we had designed and installed; we wanted to ensure each garden had its unique feel. The concept was to create a natural intersection of the bay’s native topography and a more eclectic Mediterranean-style garden that mimicked the homeowners’ style.

In the final design, the front yard took on the simple repetition of the surrounding nature, ushering you out of the bay and onto the property seamlessly. Deeper in the garden and backyard, our planting got more intricate. The fire treatment mimics a campsite fire pit, designed with their love for camping in mind. We also sourced an old twisted sycamore log to use as seating, inspired by a family photo that featured a similar piece of driftwood. Lastly, we incorporated the owners’ incredible rock and shell collection into the final design elements, creating a blend of personal history and Estero Bay's breathtaking natural beauty.
